The exercise stress test is used to diagnose circulatory problems of the coronary arteries which can occur through physical exertion. The exercise stress test is one of the primary examinations done when coronary heart disease is suspected. The electrocardiogram is traced continually during the test, and at the end of each resistance level the patient’s blood pressure is measured. If the patient shows signs of distress, the test can be halted immediately and the electrocardiogram tracings are evaluated on the spot.
